Our Story
The Canopy was born from a desire to live more simply — closer to nature, and in tune with the pace of the land.
When we first came to Sri Lanka, it was the richness of life here that struck us most: the birds, the trees, the gardens that seem to breathe. We weren’t looking for a big project — just a place that felt right. Then we found this forgotten estate on a hill near Meepe Temple. The land had been farmed for over a century — tea, cinnamon — but had been left untouched for years. Something about it called to us.
We decided to restore it gently, without rushing. We kept the original house just as it was — compact, full of charm, with high ceilings and carved details — and made space for the forest to return around it. What began as a simple renovation turned into something deeper: a long-term vision of rewilding and renewal.
We now care for six acres of land, and our intention is to let it flourish — to create walking paths through native trees, to grow food in harmony with the environment, and to offer others a place to pause, breathe, and reconnect.
The Canopy is a forest home. A quiet retreat above the trees, where birds fly level with the veranda and fireflies light up the evenings. It’s a place shaped by nature — and still very much becoming.
